Abstract

Fertilizers are prepared by contacting the surfaces of ammonium nitrate or urea prills with phosphoric acid and then ammoniating, to obtain coated prills having a P2O5 content at least sufficient to provide a 6 : 1 ratio of nitrogen to P2O5. The prills are passed through a rotating drum where they are sprayed with phosphoric acid in a first zone and with liquid ammonia in a later zone, and then dried. Some of the coated frills are recycled to ensure acid does not pass into the ammoniating zone. The temperature is below 200 DEG F., preferably 140 DEG to 180 DEG F. The nitrogen to P2O5 ratio may be 2 to 4 : 1 for ammonium nitrate prills, and 2 to 4.5 : 1 for urea prills. Examples are given.
