Abstract

A process for the treatment of compound fertilizers containing phosphate and nitrate ions comprises contacting the fertilizer with a solution of urea or a salt of urea. Preferably the fertilizer contains 2-35% of P2O5 as superphosphate, triple superphosphate, monocalcium phosphate, dicalcium phosphate, monoammonium phosphate or diammonium phosphate; 0,5 to 15% (as N) of ammonium nitrate and 0-30% (as K2O) of potassium nitrate or potassium chloride. The urea salt may be the nitrate, phosphate, hydrochloride, sulphate, acetate, oxalate, tartrate or citrate. The urea solution may be added in a paddle or rotary mixer; or sprayed on while the fertilizer is carried on a conveyer or down a shoot, or while it is being tumbled in a rotary mixer, rotary drum, paddle mixer or blunger.
