Abstract

Organic matter present in phosphates to be used in the production of fertilizers, and selected from the group consisting of superphosphate, triple superphosphate, monocalcium phosphate, dicalcium phosphate, monoammonium phosphate, and dicalcium phosphate is preoxidized by treating the phosphate with an oxidizingagent. This preoxidation prevents undue rises in temperature in the stored fertilizers. Preferably the treated material is stored for at least 3 days before being employed in the manufacture of fertilizers. Suitable oxidizing agents include nitric acid or ammonium nitrate, preferably in the form of aqueous solutions, which may be sprayed on to the phosphate, potassium permanganate, or manganese dioxide, for example, in the form of pyrolusite. When solid oxidizing agents are employed, they may be mixed in finely divided form with finely divided phosphate rock prior to acid treatment, or with the acid which is to be used to dissolve the rock, in the production of superphosphate.
