Abstract

Oleum containing at least one nitrogen-oxygen compound is denitrosed by adding to it a derivative of ammonia, the derivative being urea, amidosulphonic acid, hydrazine sulphate, hydroxyl ammonium sulphate, or acetamide. The derivatives are usually used in excess of the amounts of nitrogen-oxygen compounds in the oleum, although hydrazine sulphate is effective when not in excess, but only below a concentration of 50% oleum. Urea is efficient at a temperature of 50 DEG C., and in relatively small amounts. The oleum is heated to the required temperature with agitation, and then mixed with a small amount of the ammonia derivative to be used, either in powder form or in the form of a solution in concentrated sulphuric acid. The reaction is usually complete after 60-100 minutes. The initial concentration of the nitrogen-oxygen compounds before denitrosation may be determined so that the quantity of ammonia derivative can be varied accordingly. 30% oleum may be distilled after denitrosation to produce 100% oleum, or may be mixed with 100% oleum to produce 65% oleum.
