Abstract

Phosphatic fertilizer is made by dissolving a phosphate rock in nitric acid, adding sulphuric acid to the product to precipitate the calcium as calcium sulphate, adding to the remaining liquid further phosphate rock-preferably equivalent to the phosphoric acid content of the remaining liquid-and treating the product with a neutralizing agent, e.g. ammonia or potassium hydroxide or carbonate, under agitation. The nitric acid is preferably 40-60% concentration but may be wholly or in part replaced by urea nitrate; the sulphuric acid is 50-100% concentration. Plant foods such as ammonium sulphate or nitrate or potassium chloride may be added to the product which is desirably granulated.
