Abstract

A phosphatic fertilizer is produced by treating a phosphate rock (e.g. a calcium phosphate Morocco rock) with a mixture comprising an ammonium salt, nitric acid and phosphoric acid and treating the product so obtained with ammonia. The preferred ammonium salt is the sulphate. It is preferred that the reactants, expressed per mole of P2O5 of the rock, be in proportions of 1,4 mole ammonium sulphate, 1 mole phosphoric acid, 4 to 8 moles of nitric acid and 2,2 to 6,2 moles of ammonia. The phosphoric acid may be 50 per cent concentrated, the nitric acid 60 per cent concentrated, the ammonia anhydrous or a 25 to 35 per cent aqueous solution, and the ammonium sulphate is dissolved in the acid reactants. Desirably the product obtained is granulated and dried. Optional additions are other plant foods such as ammonium sulphate, ammonium nitrate and potassium chloride.
