Abstract
A process for the production of phosphatic fertilizers of high phosphate water solubility comprises reacting phosphate rock with at least 4 makes of phosphoric acid per mole of P2O2 in the rock and at least 4 moles of nitric acid per mole of P2O5 in the rock and neutralising the product so obtained e.g. with ammonia under agitation. The acids may be added to the rock together or sequentially and the reactive time is suitably at least 10 minutes. During neutralization the slurry obtained from the acid attack on the rock is preferably strongly agitated, in which case the mode of adding the neutralizer is arbitrary, but if the agitation is not vigorous the neutralizer should be added batchwise at a temperature less than 60 DEG C. Convenient acids to use in the process are the commercial concentrated grades i.e. 50-70% concentrated phosphoric acid and 40-60% concentrated nitric acid. The nitric acid may be replaced wholly or in part by urea nitrate. Other neutralizing agents than ammonia are potassium hydroxide or potassium carbonate, and other fertilizer components such as ammonium sulphate ammonium nitrate or potassium chloride may be added to the product, which may also be granulated.
