Abstract

In the preparation of a fertilizer composition a stainless steel reactor equipped with stirring and cooling means is charged with 925 pounds of 57% nitric acid and 0.11 pounds of sodium salt of sulphonated oleic acid. 582 pounds of phosphate rock are slowly added with constant stirring. Next 105 pounds of anhydrous ammonia is introduced into the reaction mix ture at a slow rate, i.e. a rate which does not permit the exothermic reaction to exceed a temperature of 200 DEG F. This slow addition is closely monitored until the pH of the solution reaches substantially 7, that is on the order of 6.7 to 7.2 Next 137 pounds of water is added along with 83 pounds of potassium sulphate and 284 pounds of potassium chloride. A further composition comprises 500 lb. HNO3, 57%; 405 lb. phosphate rock 34.4% P2O5; 290 lb. phosphoric acid 55.0% P2O5; 235 lb. KCl, 60.5% K2O; 100 lb. anhydrous NH3; 500 lb. of water and 0.11 lb. of sulphonated oleic acid, Na salt. In yet a third composition the second is modified by reducing the water to 275 lb. and increasing the KCl 60.5% K2O to 470 lb.
