Abstract

A monocalcium phosphate-based fertilizer material is prepared by reacting phosphate rock in the presence of water and/or acid with an alkali metal or ammonium hydrogen sulphate, added as such or formed in situ by reaction between an alkali metal or ammonium chloride and sulphuric acid, the amount of hydrogen sulphate formed or added constituting at least 4.8 mols. per mol. of P2O5 in the rock. If desired, potassium chloride may be reacted with sulphuric acid to form the hydrogen sulphate and the reaction mixture, if desired after removal of HCl, is added to the phosphate to be treated. If water is employed it may constitute between 25 and 200 per cent by weight of the rock; the acids for example sulphuric, nitric or phosphoric acids when used, are preferably concentrated and their presence enables the amount of hydrogen sulphate to be reduced. The reaction may be effected at room or elevated temperature and the final product may be ammoniated and granulated.ALSO:A process for the production of fertilizer material comprises reacting together phosphate rock and an alkali metal or ammonium hydrogen sulphate in the presence of water and/or acid, at least 4,8 mols. of the hydrogen sulphate being used per mol. of P2O5 in the rock. Preferably potassium hydrogen sulphate is used and a suitable material may be produced by reacting potassium chloride with sulphuric acid and removing the hydrogen chloride formed. The phosphate rock which may be finely divided is preferably calciferous rock, e.g. Merocco or Gafsa rock. The process, which results in a product which has a high phosphate availability, converts all or part of the P2O5 present in the rock into monocalcium phosphate. The product may be ammoniated.
