Abstract
Alkali metal nitrates are prepared by the reaction of alkali metal chlorides with nitric acid, the nitric acid in the final part of the reaction being maintained at a concentration of at least 40%, for example by distilling the reaction mixture, or by the addition of fresh nitric acid. The reaction may be carried out in stages in two or more reaction vessels, for example in three reaction vessels arranged as a cascade, and the distillation of the mixture may be confined to the final vessel. Nitrosyl chloride and chlorine are also formed during the reaction. The nitrate solution may be heated to recover the nitrate, or it may be reacted with phosphate rock or phosphoric acid to produce complex fertilizers (see Group I). Specifations 876,564 and 876,565 are referred to.ALSO:Complex fertilizers may be prepared by treating the alkali metal nitrate solution obtained by reacting alkali metal chlorides with nitric acid, such that the concentration of the nitric acid in the final part of the reaction is at least 40%, with phosphoric acid or phosphate rock in particulate form. Desirably the alkali metal is potassium, the nitric acid is employed in excess of 4 mols acid per 3 mols chloride, and the concentration of the nitric acid in the final part of the reaction is adjusted by distilling the reaction mixture. Specifications 876,564 and 876,565 are referred to.
