Abstract
In the decomposition of calcium phosphates with nitric acid, either alone or in the presence of other acid, e.g. sulphuric acid, to give a mixture of phosphoric acid, calcium nitrate and the calcium salt of the other acid, if present, the reaction is conducted in a medium constituted exclusively by the products resulting from the same treatment applied in the course of a previous reaction to identical materials. The said products should have at least five times the mass of that of the materials reacted. The operation is preferably carried out by adding the acid and phosphate continuously to an overflow vat in about one-fifth of the quantity which the vat is capable of treating. An operating temperature of 40 DEG C., and the use of nitric acid of 70 per cent concentration or more are specified.
