Abstract

One or more ammonium and/or alkali metal sulphates are added to a fertilizer material comprising ammonium nitrate and a superphosphate or other product containing free phospheric acid, in order to prevent loss of nitrogen and conversion of water soluble phosphate to insoluble phosphate in granulation or drying processes. The resultant mixture is thereafter subjected to heat treatment which may be part of the drying and/or granulating step. The sulphate is incorporated into the mixture in an amount at least equivalent to the free phospheric acid present, and the relative proportions of nitrate to sulphate may vary between equimolecular amounts up to a ratio of 4 : 1. Ammonium sulphate nitrate may be used as a source, both of sulphate and nitrate. A sample fertilizer according to the invention contains superphosphate, triple superphosphate, ammonium sulphate, ammonium nitrate and a potassium salt such as potassium chloride.
