Abstract

A process for the manufacture of nitrilotriacetonitrile, wherein a salt of ammonia with a non-oxidizing acid is reacted with formaldehyde and hydrocyanic acid in an aqueous-acid phase at an elevated temperature, comprises introducing anhydrous or aqueous HCN into an aqueous solution of formaldehyde and said ammonium salt, the HCN or aqueous solution thereof being introduced within a short period of time with strong agitation and while cooling the reaction mixture down to a temperature of at most 60 DEG C., reacting the reactants, which are used in stoichiometric proportions, with the resultant formation of nitrilotriacetonitrile and of acid liberated by the ammonium salt, isolating the nitrilo-triacetonitrile in conventional manner from the reaction mixture, and optionally washing with water and drying it. The non-oxidizing acid may be sulphuric, phosphoric, formic or acetic and the process may be effected continuously. The product may be hydrolysed with sodium hydroxide to the trisodium salt of nitrilo-triacetic acid.
