Abstract

Melamine is prepared by reacting urea with a salt or amide of sulphamic acid without the addition of ammonia, the molar ratio of the two reactants being substantially 1:1 (i.e. \sB 10%) when these reactants are urea and a salt of sulphamic acid, and substantially 2:1 (i.e. \sB 25%) when the reactants are urea and sulphamide respectively, the reaction temperature being maintained uniform throughout the reaction zone, and being from 280 DEG to 340 DEG C., and the pressure being at least 50 p.s.i.g. (4.5 atmospheres abs.). The sulphamate is preferably an ammonium or alkali metal sulphamate, but small amounts of sulphamic acid may also be present, as well as catalytic amounts of boron, phosphorus, arsenic or antimony compounds.
