Abstract

Butyrolactams and d -valerolactams, respectively, are formed by reacting substituted or unsubstituted g -aminobutyronitrile or d -aminovaleronitrile with water in the absence of a catalyst at a temperature of from 150 DEG to 180 DEG C. The reaction is advantageously effected under pressure and in the presence of excess water, preferably in the presence of more than two mols. of water per mol. of nitrile. Aqueous mixtures such as a solution of ammonia in water may be used instead of pure water. The process may be continuous or intermittent. In examples, d - aminovaleronitrile, with varying amounts of water, is heated over a period of 1 1/4 hours to 180 DEG C. in a shaker-type autoclave of V4A steel and maintained at this temperature for 4 hours, to produce d -valerolactam.
