Abstract

N-methylol formamide is obtained by heating together formamide and an anhydrous polymer of formaldehyde under anhydrous conditions, as defined below, at a temperature in the range of 75 DEG C. to 105 DEG C. in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide as catalyst. The formaldehyde polymer is preferably paraformaldehyde and the catalyst may be added as a concentrated aqueous solution, but no other water may be present in the reaction mixture.
