Abstract

An unsaturated aldehyde is produced from formaldehyde, an aldehyde containing at least 3 carbon atoms and a salt of a secondary amine by feeding the aldehydes, amine salt and water to a reaction zone at superatmospheric pressure and at a temperature in the range 90 DEG to 120 DEG C., maintaining the reactants in the zone until at least 90% of the higher aldehyde is converted to the Mannich base salt, feeding the mixture thus produced continuously into a second reaction zone at an elevated temperature sufficiently high to decompose the Mannich base salt to form an unsaturated aldehyde and an aqueous solution of the amine salt, boiling the reaction mixture to drive off the unsaturated aldehyde continuously, and continuously recycling the aqueous amine salt to the first reaction zone. The process is of particular importance in the production of methacrolein starting from formaldehyde, propionaldehyde and dimethylamine hydrochloride, which may be represented as follows:- <FORM:0825021/IV (b)/1>
