Abstract

2.21-Dipyridyl is manufactured by a process comprising reacting 2-bromo-, 2-chloro- or 2-iodopyridine with finely divided iron, cobalt or nickel. Preferably, the Raney form of the metal is used and the process is carried out at a temperature in the range 100-400 DEG C. and at elevated pressure. The 2.21-dipyridyl may be separated from the reaction mixture by treating it with excess alkali followed by steam distillation; the product is isolated from the aqueous distillate by neutralizing with mineral acid, evaporating and treating with caustic alkali and extracting the resulting mixture with ether, followed by distillation of the ethereal solution.
