Abstract

Melamine is manufactured by heating guanidine sulphamate in the presence of ammonia to at least 260 DEG C. in a reaction zone maintained under a superatmospheric pressure of ammonia (preferably at least about 500 lbs./sq. in.). The reaction mixture may be made more fluid (enabling the process to be operated continuously) by introducing ammonium sulphamate with the starting materials, e.g. part of the ammonium sulphamate formed as a by-product may be recycled with unreacted guanidine sulphamate. The reaction product may be withdrawn in a fluid state and the melamine separated therefrom, e.g. by cooling and leaching with cold water and then leaching out the melamine from the residue with hot water. The reaction vessel should be lined with corrosion-resisting material, e.g. tantalum or certain glasses or enamels. Examples show the effects of variations in the time and conditions of the reaction.ALSO:Apparatus for the manufacture of melamine by heating guanidine sulphamate under a superatmospheric pressure of ammonia may be lined with tantalum or certain glasses or enamels to resist corrosion.
