Abstract

Guanidine sulphamate is produced by heating, in the absence of water, a mixture of urea, ammonia and sulphur dioxide at a temperature of at least about 220 DEG C. in a reaction zone maintained under a superatmospheric pressure of ammonia for a period of time at least sufficient to initiate the reactions between the reactants to form guanidine sulphamate, and separating and recovering guanidine sulphamate from the reaction product. The process can be operated at temperatures in the range of about 220 DEG -360 DEG C. or above. Preferably the pressure of ammonia is from 200 to 1,000 lbs. per sq. in. and a molecular ratio of sulphur dioxide to urea of at least 3:1 is used. Guanidine sulphamate may be separated from the reaction mixture by leaching it with an aqueous solution saturated with guanidine sulphamate and ammonium sulphate.
