Abstract

Melamine is produced by charging urea, guanidine sulphamate, ammonia and sulphur dioxide into a reaction zone maintained above 260 DEG C. and under a superatmospheric pressure of ammonia, continuing the reaction to produce a product containing melamine, sulphur, ammonium sulphate and guanidine sulphamate, the yield of melamine being 30-55% of the theoretical yield based on the carbon content of the urea and guanidine sulphamate charged, continuously withdrawing the reaction product from the reaction zone as a suspension in molten guanidine sulphamate, and separately recovering melamine, ammonium sulphate and guanidine sulphamate. Part at least of the recovered guanidine sulphamate may be re-cycled. The mol. ratio of guanidine sulphamate to urea in the reaction charge is preferably from 0.8:1 to 2.3:1, and of SO2 to urea preferably 3:2. The ammonium pressure is preferably above 34 atmospheres. The reaction product is preferably separated into its components by leaching to form an aqueous solution of guanidine sulphamate and ammonium sulphate, treating the residue to obtain melamine, evaporating the leach solution to precipitate ammonium sulphate, cooling to precipitate guanidine sulphamate, returning the solution to the evaporation step, drying the guanidine sulphamate, e.g. in the molten state, and returning at least part of it to the reaction zone. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 704,593 and 713,223.
