Abstract

Melamine and/or guanidine sulphate are prepared by reacting urea, ammonia and sulphur dioxide; urea, ammonia and ammonium sulphamate; ammonia and guanidine sulphamate; or ammonia and guanidine sulphate at temperatures above 200 DEG C. and under a superatmospheric pressure of ammonia, the reaction being conducted in the presence of at least 40% of elemental sulphur based on the weight of the reactants. The process is preferably carried out continuously, the sulphur recovered being recycled after removal of an amount equivalent to that formed during the reaction. Temperatures may be varied from 200 DEG C. to 360 DEG C. in order to control the relative proportions of melamine and guanidine sulphate formed, the formation of the former being favoured by the higher temperatures in the range. The process is preferably carried out in the presence of at least 0.001% by weight of boron or a compound of boron, or at least 0.01% by weight of a compound of phosphorus, antimony or arsenic, based on the weight of the reactants.
