Abstract
<PICT:0974462/C1/1> Propylene chlorohydrin is produced by reacting propylene and aqueous hypochlorous acid in at least two series connected reactors by introducing propylene and chlorine into each reactor and fresh water, in such an amount as to enable a 4 to 10% by weight solution of the chlorohydrin to be recovered from the final reactor, into only the first reactor, passing the reaction solutions from each reactor except the final reactor to the next series reactor, and recovering a propylene chlorohydrin solution from the final reactor. In the drawing, propylene and chlorine are introduced into reactors 1,2,3 and 4 via lines 5 and 6, respectively, and water is introduced into reactor 1 via line 8. The reactors, each of which has a chlorine-dissolving zone and a reactor zone, are connected together via lines 9, 10 and 11 to form a cascade. Propylene chlorohydrin solution is obtained from line 12 whilst excess gases escape via line 7 and may be recycled.
