Abstract

Substantially anhydrous alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, magnesium and ammonium salts of trichloracetic acid are prepared by gradually adding to an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, magnesium or ammonium carbonate or an alkaline earth metal or magnesium oxide or hydroxide or a mixture thereof, molten trichloracetic acid containing a maximum of 6% by weight of water at a temperature of 35 DEG to 100 DEG C. so that the water content in the entire reaction mixture does not exceed 3% by weight at any stage of the reaction while effecting mechanical mixing and drying the reaction product after the conversion is terminated in the reaction zone at approximately the same temperature as that applied during the reaction. In a modification, anhydrous acid is employed and the water added separately during the course of the reaction or is present in the metal or ammonium compound reactant. The process of the invention may be performed batchwise or continuously.
