Abstract

Dichloroalkyl thiazoles are prepared by treating a (C1- 6 alkyl) thiazole with chlorine in the presence of a free radical initiator and in a reaction medium comprising sulphuric acid, fuming sulphuric acid, chlorosulphonic acid, pyrosulphuric acid or mixtures thereof, the reaction being continued until the weight of dichloroalkyl thiazole in the reaction mixture exceeds the weight of monochloroalkylthiazole. A minor amount of a tri- or penta-halide of P, As or Sb may also be present during the chlorination. The dichloroalkyl thiazoles may be converted to the corresponding thiazole aldehydes by hydrolysis.
