Abstract

Polychloro-p-toluenesulphonic acids or their salts are produced by chlorinating the unchlorinated precursor in a medium of mineral acid containing at least 50 wt. per cent sulphuric acid and preferably in presence of I2, KI or NaI. The product may be converted to a polychlorotoluene by adjusting the sulphuric acid/water ratio to 7 : 3-8 : 2 and heating to 150-200 DEG C.
