Abstract

In order to esterify the free fatty acids present as impurities in lanoline having an acid number of approximately one, the lanoline is treated with ethylene oxide in the presence of not more than 0.01% by weight of NaOH or KOH as catalyst so that not more than 3% by weight of ethylene oxide is absorbed, the treatment being effected at 160 DEG to 180 DEG C. and at not more than three atmospheres and being continued until the lanolin is in hydrogenizable form and has an acid number of less than 0.4.
