Abstract

Hydroxyalkyl acrylates and methacrylates are prepared by the selective hydrolysis of the corresponding vinyl ethers, by means of a dilute aqueous solution of a strong mineral acid, such as sulphuric, hydrochloric, nitric and phosphoric acids. The reaction is preferably carried out in the presence of a free radical polymerisation inhibitor, such as hydroquinone and N. N1-di-2-(1, 4-naphthoquinonyl)-p-phenylenediamine. A co-solvent such as dioxane may be present. Specification 715,913 is referred to.
