Abstract
A continuous process for the production of acrylamide comprises the saponification of acrylonitrile with sulphuric acid and water, in which the reaction is carried out at 150-250 DEG C., the time of reaction being less than 20 minutes, and the mixture then being cooled. Preferably the starting materials are used in equimolar ratio ; polymerisation inhibitors may be present. The reaction mixture may be worked up in known manner by neutralising the sulphuric acid present. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 631,592.
