Abstract

Terephthalic acid is purified by heating the crude acid with a fatty acid of less than 7 carbon atoms until solution occurs, cooling the resultant solution and allowing the terephthalic acid to crystallize out. Aqueous solutions of the fatty acid may be used in place of the pure fatty acid and heating may be conducted under pressure to a temperature above the normal boiling point of the fatty acid. Fatty acids mentioned are acetic, propionic and butyric acids. The purification may be preceded by a recrystallization of the crude terephthalic acid from water under pressure. Examples are given.
