Abstract
2 : 3 : 6-Trichlorobenzoic acid is separated from a mixture of polychlorobenzoic acids by treating the mixture with an alcohol under esterifying conditions and thereafter separating the unesterified 2 : 3 : 6-trichlorobenzoic acid from the mixture. The mixture may be heated with the alcohol e.g. methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, and beta-ethoxyethyl alcohol preferably in the proportions of at least 2 molecular proportions of alcohol for each molecular proportion of esterifiable acids in the mixture, with the addition of an acid esterification catalyst e.g. sulphuric or hydrochloric acid. The unesterified acid is separated from the esterification mixture by extraction with water in a base, e.g. sodium or potassium carbonate or sodium or potassium bicarbonate, or an organic base and thereafter the trichlorobenzoic acid is recovered as free acid by acidification of the aqueous phase from the extraction.
