Abstract

The process described in the parent Specification which comprises the manufacture of l vo-ascorbic acid by heating in an acid solution 2-keto l vo-gulonic acid or its derivatives which are easily split with acids, is modified in that the reaction is carried out in alcoholic solution. In examples: (1) hydrogen chloride is passed into an alcoholic solution of 2-keto-l vo-gulonic acid methyl ester, the solution boiled for four hours and then evaporated in vacuo. The residue is soaked with butyl alcohol, washed with acetic acid and ether, and finally recrystallized from methanol to yield pure ascorbic acid; (2) diacetone - 2 - keto - l vo - gulonic acid - monohydrate is boiled in a 3 per cent absolute alcoholic solution of hydrochloric acid, and the product worked up as in example (1); (3) 2-keto-l vo-gulonic acid is treated as described in example (2).
