Abstract
1-Acylamino - 2 - chloro-naphthalene-3-sulphonic acid or the corresponding 2-bromocompound are produced by the action of chlorine or bromine on the appropriate 1-acylamino-naphthalene-3-sulphonic acid (or the alkali metal salts thereof), the reaction being carried out in a medium comprising an anhydrous lower aliphatic carboxylic acid. The products obtained can readily be converted into the corresponding 1-amino-2-chloro and -2- bromo-naphthalene sulphonic acids by splitting off the acyl group in an acid medium. In the example, chlorine is passed into a solution of the sodium salt of 1-acetyl-amino-naphthalene-3-sulphonic acid in glacial acetic acid, at a temperature of 10 DEG C. whereupon 1-acetylamino - 2 - chloronaphthalene-3-sulphonic acid is precipitated. This is filtered off, and may be boiled with hydrochloric acid to give 1-amino-2-chloronaphthalene-3-sulphonic acid.
