Abstract

g - (2 - Methyl - 4 - chlorophenoxy) - butyric acid and its salts and esters are prepared by chlorinating g -(2-methylphenoxy)-butyric acid, or salts or esters thereof, with free chlorine. The acid may be chlorinated in the molten state or in a solvent, the salts in aqueous solution, and the esters (mostly liquid at room temperature) in the presence or absence of a solvent. Chlorination catalysts (e.g. iodine, iron or ferric chloride) may be used, but are not necessary. Examples describe the action of chlorine on: (1) the molten free acid; (2) a solution of the acid in ethylene chloride; (3) an aqueous solution of the sodium salt, prepared by dissolving the acid in caustic soda, additional caustic soda being added gradually during the chlorination; (4) the methyl ester, diluted with ethylene chloride.
