Abstract

Mono-, di- or tri-nuclear chlorinated phenoxyalkyl carboxylic acids are prepared by chlorinating the corresponding carboxylic acid in a solvent at an elevated temperature. Specified solvents are glacial acetic acid and tetrachlorethylene. The degree of substitution is controlled by using substantially the theoretical amount of chlorine to produce the required compound. The progress of the chlorination is preferably followed by determination of the amount of evolved hydrochloric acid. In examples: (1) chlorine is passed into a solution of phenoxyacetic acid in glacial acetic acid giving 4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid; (2) 2 : 4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid is similarly prepared; (3) 2 : 4 : 6-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid is similarly prepared; (4) 2 : 4-dichloro-g -phenoxybutyric acid is prepared from g -phenoxybutyric acid by chlorination as in (1) in the presence of a trace of iodine, and (5) 2 : 4-dichloro-a -phenoxypropionic acid is prepared by passing chlorine into a solution of a -phenoxypropionic acid in glacial acetic acid in the presence of a reduced iron powder catalyst.
