Abstract

The invention comprises chloro-(4 or 5)-hydroxyindanes of the formula <FORM:0770593/IV(b)/1> where n is 1 or 2 and their preparation by treating the corresponding unchlorinated hydroxy indane with n-equivalents of sulphuryl chloride. The dichloro derivatives may also be made by further chlorination of the monochloro compounds. The products are used as bactericides. In examples: (1) 4-indanol is treated with sulphuryl chloride in acetic acid to give 7-chloro-4-indanol and 5-chloro-4-indanol which are isolated from the reaction product by fractional crystallization; (2) 5-indanol is chlorinated as in (1) to give 6-chloro-5-indanol which is isolated from admixture with smaller amounts of 4-chloro-5-indanol and 7-chloro-5-indanol by fractional crystallization, and (3) 4-indanol is chlorinated with 2 mol. of sulphuryl chloride to give 5 : 7-dichloro-4-indanol which is isolated by fractional crystallization.
