Abstract

Organic carboxylic acid hypohalogenites are obtained by reaction of the acids or their salts with halogens. The hypohalogenites react with substances containing olefinic double bonds, e.g. acetic acid hypochlorite reacts with allyl chloride to form dichloropropyl acetate, and butyric acid hypobromite reacts with cyclohexene to form a bromocyclohexyl ester of butyric acid.ALSO:Rubber in solution or non-aqueous dispersion is reacted with a hypohalogenite of an organic carboxylic acid. The hypohalogenite may be prepared in situ, e.g. by passing chlorine into a mixture of carboxylic acid and rubber in an organic solvent. Excess of halogen may be used, so that the product is also halogenated. The preparation of the acid hypohalogenites, and the reactions thereof with compounds containing olefinic double bonds, are described. Specification 433,082 is referred to.
