Abstract
A chlorinated aliphatic acid is prepared by introducing chlorine into a heated aliphatic acid of not more than four carbon atoms which contains a small quantity of the corresponding anhydride or acidyl chloride, and is free from inorganic chlorination catalysts, until at least 50 per cent of the acid is chlorinated, and adding small quantities of said anhydride or acidyl chloride during the process to maintain the presence of acidyl chloride throughout the same. In preparing chloracetic acid, additional acetyl chloride or acetic anhydride may be added before absorption falls noticeably, conveniently after absorption times of 3-5 hrs. Thus, 15-20 parts of chlorine per hour may be passed into 100 parts of acetic acid containing 3-5 parts of acetic anhydride, 2-3 parts of additional anhydride being added after 4 hr. absorption periods to obtain in 12 hrs. a product which crystallizes on cooling and is equivalent to more than 80 per cent conversion. In an example, 16-17 parts of chlorine per hour are introduced into 95-100 of glacial acetic acid and 4 of acetic anhydride at 105 DEG C., over 12 hrs., 2 parts of acetic anhydride being added every 2-3 hrs.
