Abstract
Diketene is obtained from ketene by dimerizing it in the presence of diketene and acetic anhydride and removing the heat of dimerization of the ketene. It is preferred to have present at least 50 per cent of acetic anhydride based on the weight of diketene and acetic anhydride together. The process may be carried out continuously or batchwise. Suitable temperatures for carrying out the process are 0-70 DEG C. and preferably 10-40 DEG C. Desirably, acetic anhydride is added continuously to the reactor to maintain the diketene to acetic anhydride ratio at a constant level. An example is given.
