Abstract
1 - Benzamido - 1 - phenyl - 3 - piperidinopropane is made by reacting 1-phenyl-3-piperidinopropanol with benzonitrile in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid at a temperature of 30 DEG to 100 DEG C., preferably between 50 DEG and 60 DEG C. If desired, the reaction may be carried out in a solvent such as glacial acetic acid. The product may be purified either via a crystalline salt such as the hydrochloride or by recrystallization of the free base.
