Abstract

Crystalline sodium d-pantothenate is obtained by reacting the sodium salt of b -alanine with (-)-a -hydroxy - b : b - dimethyl-g -butyrolactone by heating under anhydrous conditions, and crystallising the fused product from a solution in an aliphatic alcohol, having not more than three atoms of carbon in the molecule. The reaction itself may also be effected in the presence of the alcohol. In examples, the sodium salt of b -alanine is refluxed in ethyl and isopropyl alcohol with (-)-a -hydroxy-b : b -dimethyl-g -butyrolactone and the sodium d-pantothenate crystallised out after filtration. In a further example, the reactants are fused together and the product dissolved in ethyl alcohol and crystallised. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 552,581.
