Abstract

b - (2-Carboxy-indolyl-(3))-a -aminopropionic acid is prepared by reacting 21,31-indo-3,4-pyrone-(2)-carboxylic acid-(6) with aqueous caustic alkali to form b -(2-carboxy-indolyl-(3))-pyruvic acid, and treating this intermediate product with ammonia, followed by hydrogenation of the reaction mixture. p 21,31-Indo-3,4-pyrone-(2)-carboxylic acid-(6) is prepared by subjecting the phenylhydrazone of a -ketoglutaric acid to a Fischer indole synthesis in alcohol to give ethyl (2-carbethoxy-indolyl-(3)) acetate, reacting the latter with diethyl oxalate to form ethyl b -(2-carbethoxy-indolyl-(3))-ethoxalyl-acetate, and heating this latter compound in acetic acid in the presence of para-toluenesulphonic acid.
