Abstract

b -Hydromuconic seminitrile and the methyl and ethyl esters thereof are obtained by treating at temperatures ranging between 10 DEG and 100 DEG C. the products obtained by hydrolysis of 1 - chloro - 4 - cyano - 2 - butene at temperatures ranging between 0 DEG and 40 DEG C. by means of concentrated hydrochloric acid in the presence of water, methyl alcohol or ethyl alcohol, respectively, with hydrocyanic acid or sodium cyanide in an aqueous solution containing copper(ous) salts, sodium salts, copper metal and a buffer comprising calcium or magnesium carbonate. The water, methanol or ethanol used during the hydrolysis of the chlorocyanobutene may be admixed with inert solvents and the hydrolysis products may be directly treated with hydrocyanic acid or its sodium salt without isolation from the reaction mixture. Specified intermediates obtained by hydrolysis of the 1 - chloro - 4 - cyano - 2 - butene are: 5 - chloro-3-pentenoic acid and the methyl ester, ethyl ester and amide thereof. Use of the latter amide yields the amide of beta-hydromuconic seminitrile as an intermediate product, requiring hydrolysis with hydrochloric acid to provide beta-hydromuconic semi-nitrile.
