Abstract

Alkyl acyl-aminocyanoacetates are obtained by reacting an alkyl isonitrosocyanoacetate with a cold aqueous solution of a water-soluble metal hydrosulphite, e.g. sodium hydrosulphite and an acylating agent such as a lower aliphatic acid anhydride, e.g. acetic or propionic anhydride. The alkyl isonitrosocyanoacetates are obtained by nitrosating alkyl cyanoacetates and may be used without isolation from the resulting reaction mixture. In examples: (1) ethyl isonitrosocyanoacetate is treated with acetic anhydride and sodium hydrosulphite at 0-10 DEG C. to produce ethyl acetylaminocyanoacetate; (2) ethyl cyanoacetate is treated with sodium nitrite followed by treatment with acetic anhydride and sodium hydrosulphite to produce ethyl acetylaminocyanoacetate.
