Abstract

5-Nitrofurfuraldehyde diacetate is prepared by the nitration of furfuraldehyde with phosphoric acid and an alkali metal nitrate in the presence of acetic anhydride. In a preferred process a mixture of furfuraldehyde, acetic anhydride and sodium nitrate is added to a mixture of approximately 100% phosphoric acid and acetic anhydride to effect nitration at a temperature of 30 DEG to 50 DEG C. N - (5 - Nitro - 2 - furfurylidene) - 1 - amino-hydantoin, i.e. nitrofurantoin, may be prepared by reacting 5-nitrofurfuraldehyde diacetate with the reaction product obtained by the reaction of potassium cyanate with ethyl hydrazino-acetic acid ester hydrochloride.
