Abstract

Dimethyl b -ketoadipate and dimethyl a -methyl-b -ketoadipate are prepared by a process consisting in treating the ethyl methyl ester of b -ketoadipic acid with sodium methoxide in methanol in the case of the former, and in the case of the latter further reacting the product with a methyl halide. Examples are furnished. The products are employed in the preparation intermediates for the preparation of oestrone according to the process of Specification 942,663.
