Abstract
m-Fluoroanilines (I): (where R is same or different alkyl, alkoxy or carboxylic acid (C1-4), hydroxyl, nitro or trihalomethyl; n is 0,1,2,3 or 4) must be prepd. by diazotisation of an m-aminoacetanilide (II) with 1.0-1.5 moles NaNO2 and a minimum 50% aqs. HF soln. contg. 2-3 moles HF at -20 to +25 degrees C, heating the mixture for max. 10 hrs. at 20-75 degrees C, followed by cooling, neutralisation and isolation of (I). Alternatively an m-phenylenediamine (III) must first be acetylated with 1-15 moles of an acetylation agent using known methods and (II) formed must be further reacted as described above without previous isolation. Known cpds. (I) are intermediates in the prepn. of plant growth-regulating agents, dyes and herbicides and may also be used as reagents for characterisation of amino acids and peptides. The process is economical and safe, using cheaper starting materials without isolation of intermediate products and giving higher yields than known processes.
