Abstract

N - b - nitroxyethyl - N - nitro - N1 - nitroguanidine is prepared by nitrating a compound of formula <FORM:0673709/IV (b)/1> where X is OH or NO3 with a nitration agent consisting of over 4 and preferably at least 5 mols. of nitric acid per mol. of said compound and at least 1 mol. of acetic anhydride per mol. of said compound, the temperature during the nitration reaction being p maintained within the range of 30 DEG to 60 DEG C. The nitration may be carried out in two stages passing through an intermediate compound b -nitroxyethyl-nitroguanidine or it may be carried out in a single stage. To produce the intermediary 2-4 mols. of nitric acid per mol. of starting material should be present. In examples (1) b -hydroxyethylnitroguanidine, and (2) b -nitroxyethylnitroguanidine are treated with nitric acid dissolved in acetic anhydride, the product is precipitated by pouring on ice and recrystallized from aqueous methanol.
