Abstract
Tetraesters of pentaerythritol having the formula: <FORM:0951670/C2/1> in which R represents an acetyl, propionyl, butyryl, acid succinyl or acid phthalyl radical, are obtained by reacting 5 to 7 moles of the carboxylic acid anhydride corresponding to the ester to be obtained with 1 mole of pentaerythritol in the presence of a catalyst which is a polybasic mineral oxacid containing some of its corresponding anhydride dissolved in it. In an embodiment, the carboxylic acid anhydride is mixed with 1 to 6% by weight, based on the anhydride, of the catalyst, and after raising the temperature of the mixture finely divided pentaerythritol is slowly added, after which the reaction mixture is poured into cold water to precipitate the tetraester which is then recrystallized. Specified esterification catalysts are phosphoric acid/phosphoric anhydride and sulphuric acid/sulphuric anhydride (e.g. a mixture of sulphuric acid and oleum). Examples illustrate the preparation of pentaerythritol tetra-acetate and pentaerythritol tetrapropionate.
