Abstract

Lower alkyl esters of 3-iodo-4-methoxyphenylacetic acid having less than 4 carbon atoms in the alkyl group are prepared by reacting the acid with a lower alkanol in the presence of an acid catalyst, by treating the acid anhydride or the acid chloride of said acid with an alkanol, or by treating a metallic salt of said acid with an alkyl halide, or by treating said acid with a diazoalkane. In examples: (1) a solution of 4-methoxy-phenylacetic acid in acetic acid is reacted with iodine monochloride dissolved in acetic acid, poured into water and decolourized with sulphur dioxide, and the 3-iodo-4-methoxyphenylacetic acid formed is converted to the acid chloride with thionyl chloride and then esterified with absolute alcohol; and (2) 3-iodo-4-methoxyphenylacetic is refluxed with absolute alcohol and sulphuric acid as catalyst; the methyl, propyl and isopropyl esters are similarly prepared.
